To better understand any religious text, one must have some understanding of the language in which it was written, the cultural context (double meanings for example) it was written in, and the historical context in which it was written.
A good example for the last one is that Roman soldiers could only make a civilian carry their pack for one mile. Roman roads had very clearly marked roads, so the soldier would be punished if the civilian carried the pack even a step beyond 1 mile. Yeshu (Jesus) was advocating civil disobedience in the face of oppression.

Also, King James altered a number of things (mostly things related to his politics) in the translation he commissioned. So one would probably want a translation of the Christian that ISN'T derived from the Kings James version. Unless the changes Humpty Dumpty made were corrected.
